Should Christians Prioritize Taking Care of Their Bodies?

christians-prioritising-staying-healthy (6)Taking care of our bodies is often seen as a personal choice or a matter of physical wellbeing. However, for Christians, the question of whether or not to prioritize caring for our bodies goes beyond physical health. It is about honoring and stewarding the vessel that God has given us. In this blog, we will explore the importance of prioritizing our physical wellbeing as Christians.

1. Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit: In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, the apostle Paul reminds us that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. As believers, we carry the presence of God within us. Just as the Old Testament temple was a sacred place, we too should treat our bodies as a holy dwelling. This means taking care of our bodies physically, mentally, and spiritually.

2. Good health enables greater service to others: When we neglect our physical health, we limit our ability to fulfill our calling in serving others. Caring for our bodies allows us to have the energy, strength, and mental clarity required to impact and influence the world around us. By prioritizing our physical wellbeing, we can better serve those in need and be effective ambassadors of Christ.

3. Our bodies are instruments for worship: As Christians, we are called to worship God with our entire being, including our bodies. Romans 12:1 teaches us to present our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God. When we neglect our physical health, we are unable to fully engage in acts of worship and service. Prioritizing our physical wellbeing enables us to offer our bodies as instruments for God’s glory.

4. Taking care of our bodies is an act of gratitude: Our bodies are a gift from God, and taking care of them is a way to express gratitude for this gift. By prioritizing our health, we show appreciation for the life God has given us and the abilities with which we have been blessed. It is an act of stewardship, acknowledging that our bodies ultimately belong to God and should be used wisely and responsibly.

5. Mind, body, and spirit are interconnected: The human experience is multidimensional. Our physical, mental, and spiritual health are intricately interconnected, and neglecting one area can have consequences for the others. Prioritizing our physical wellbeing can positively impact our mental and spiritual health. It allows us to better focus on spiritual disciplines, deepen our relationship with God, and live in alignment with His will.

In conclusion, as Christians, we should prioritize taking care of our bodies. Recognizing that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, instruments for worship, and gifts from God, it is crucial to prioritize our physical wellbeing. By doing so, we enable ourselves to better serve others, worship God wholeheartedly, and live in alignment with His plan for our lives. Let us strive to honor God in all aspects of our lives, including the care of our bodies.
